What is coaching?

I'm often asked about the difference between coaching and therapy and, to be frank, the lines are becoming increasingly blurred.

The narrative used to be that therapists focus on your past and coaches focus on your future, but it's really not that black and white anymore. Therapists can help you move towards your goals and, as a trauma-informed somatic-based coach, I often work with people's trauma history (we all have trauma!). Interestingly, many therapists are now adding coaching to their scope of practice.

Whichever modality you choose, it's my firm belief that you have to work with the body, not just the mind.

Coaching is a non-judgmental and strengths-based relationship that supports you to clarify and move towards who you want to be, and what you want to experience in your life. And what I love about coaching is that it's incredibly practical and based on the belief that you are the expert on you. It connects you with your own inherent wisdom, as well as your core values and beliefs. It will also help you identify and overcome any limiting beliefs, fears or barriers to your personal growth.

Being coached is like having a mirror reflect yourself back to you. It’s incredibly powerful and will help increase your self-awareness and ability to create positive change in your life.

What you can expect in a coaching session

Sessions with me run for 60 minutes and usually start with a 5-minute meditation to help ground us both in the present. We then work through what you want to focus on and achieve for the session.

Some of the topics we can explore include:

  • Boundaries & how to find your voice/say no
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Codependency
  • Relationships/attachment and dealing with difficult people
  • Emotional and nervous system regulation
  • Feeling your feelings
  • Managing triggers
  • Stress & anxiety
  • Burnout
  • Mindfulness

I take a very therapeutic and somatic (body based) approach. You can expect me to actively listen, ask powerful questions, challenge your assumptions or thinking, invite you to sit with your feelings and act as your mirror, cheerleader, sounding board and accountability partner. You'll most likely walk away from a session with clear action steps and homework ahead of the next session.
